Plaka: the capital on the ridge

Plaka is the administrative capital. The lanes hold churches, small museums and tavernas; above them, the castle area is the classic sunset viewpoint over the bay and, on a clear evening, neighbouring islands. Visit Greece and the municipal portal present it as the island’s historic hill town. It is compact. An hour of walking covers the centre; a dinner stretches the visit into the reason most people stay after the light goes.

It pairs naturally with Trypiti just below, the Ancient Theatre area, and a descent to Klima for the painted boat houses. That sequence is the second half of a typical highlights day after the north coast.

A paved road reaches the village. What it does not do is thread a large vehicle through every alley. Drivers stop at accessible points on the edge; you walk the rest. In July and August the hunt for a space is part of the evening for anyone who self-drives. A private transfer turns that into a drop-off and a later collection. Share the restaurant or hotel name when you enquire so the meeting point is real, not a pin in the middle of a pedestrian lane.

The castle viewpoint is popular for a reason and it is busy on clear summer evenings. There is no ticketed “sunset show”: you walk up, you stand with everyone else, you walk down. Trypiti sits on the same hill system. The Ancient Theatre of Milos, a Ministry of Culture site, is reached from this side of the island; confirm current opening on the official listing before you plan a stop around it. Klima is downhill: a different mood, at the water. Walking between them is possible for people who are happy on slopes; many visitors prefer to be driven to one and collected at another. That is a conversation for the quote, not a surprise for the driver.
